In pursuit of Purity

1Timothy 5:2  The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.

You see it in small children and sometimes in the faces of old people, that quality of pureness that we wish for. Purity or holiness has been sought for over the centuries by sages, monks, hermits and the common man. People go into the wilderness to try to find it. As elusive as it is many people of every class, race or religion still seek it.
Matthew 5:6  Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
According to the Bible holiness is found in the Person of Jesus Christ. As believers we are indwelt by the Holy Spirit. When we walk in the Spirit we express that purity of Jesus. Often it is at times that we do not realize it, like when Moses' face glowed when he came down from the mountain.

Galatians 5:16  This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

Dysfunctional families dysfunctional churches

Mark 11:17 And he taught, saying unto them, Is it not written, My house shall be called of all nations the house of prayer? but ye have made it a den of thieves.

Joh 2:14-16 And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting:

And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables;

And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise.

Dysfunctional families dysfunctional churches

There is a direct parallel between the decline and failure of the family and the decline and failure of the church in America. I use the term church in a wide general sense; more in the sense of all that commonly passes for Christianity. Both have in my opinion lost their way, their purpose and their impact on society. To get a feel for the mass confusion just listen to how the media defines marriage, family and church. The definitions are all over the board. Even the basic concept of one man one woman has been attacked. Is there any hope for a return to that which worked for millenia and served mankind well? It's like changing great Grandmother's biscuit recipe thinking you can make it better. If it worked, stick with it! The original recipe for the success of family and Church has been forsaken by many for a new more modern, up to date, cool, hip, politically correct version. It has been played with and modified so much that in many cases it's no longer recognizable. Can you imagine what kind of reaction the twelve disciples would have if they walked in to one of the emerging mega churches and saw a “Christian” rock band blaring out music so loud that if they didn't have the lyrics up on a screen you couldn't even understand what they were singing? I think the message to the Laodicean Church in Revelation is fitting to the situation we find today.

Rev 3:14 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;

Rev 3:15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.

Rev 3:16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

Rev 3:17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:

Rev 3:18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.

Rev 3:19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

Rev 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

Rev 3:21 To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.

Rev 3:22 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

Original Recipe

Act 2:42-47 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.

And all that believed were together, and had all things common;

And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.

And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,

Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

signs from heaven

Luke 21:9 But when ye shall hear of wars and commotions, be not terrified: for these things must first come to pass; but the end is not by and by.

Luke 21:10 Then said he unto them, Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom:

Luke 21:11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.

Look Up! What do you see? Do you see the signs? The first coming was  announced to a few by a star. They were watching. They were ready.

When our kids were small we would occasionally make trips back to Jacksonville Florida to visit relatives. For the first part of the journey they would sleep. The bulk of the trip they were bored. We would play games like counting certain colored cars, I Spy or Twenty Questions. Even that couldn't keep boredom away completely. But when we saw the first road sign that said "Jacksonville" so many miles, they perked up. Each succeeding sign encouraged us that we were making progress on our journey. When we saw the "Welcome to Florida" sign we all rejoiced knowing that we were only a few minutes away from seeing our loved ones again, and to eating Barbeque at Sonny's Fat Boy's Barbeque.
That's sort of the way it is as we see the events that are coming upon this earth. We are not looking for anyone or anything on Earth to fix everything. Many look to science, others to religious leaders or to some personal inner light. We look for a City whose builder and maker is God.

Hebrews 11:10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

We are looking for The Kingdom of God to come as we pray in the "Lord's Prayer" But most of all we look for the Person of The Lord Jesus Christ. The signs are multiplying.

Luke 21:28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.

Progress at Holly Hill

Well the garden is basically fenced and the first few rows are planted. Dottie, Beth and I got a few things done Saturday. We mulched the area between the rows while Mike fine tuned his chain saws. We then ate an out door meal of hamburgers bought from the River Run Farm. It was a good day of fresh air and exercise.

Debbie and David

Sister Debbie related to Brother Ron that her son David was asking questions about Salvation. Thank God for his childlike interest and expression of faith!

Mat 18:1 At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?

Mat 18:2 And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them,

Mat 18:3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Mat 18:4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

Mat 18:5 And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.

Mat 18:6 But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.

Florida trip

A bunch of us went to see Raymond this last weekend in Jacksonville Florida. He was cheerful and everyone enjoyed the visit. Pray for his continued healing from severe burns from a coffee spill. It was bad enough to need skin grafts.

Working together

Last two Saturdays Feb. 12  and 19 some of us were at Mike and Beth's. We enjoyed the sunny days and got some work done. The garden is tilled and the fence is in the process of being put up. Beth has her seeds she ordered so Lord willing it won't be long before it will be planting time.

How God works

Ecc 11:5  As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit, nor how the bones do grow in the womb of her that is with child: even so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all.

Have you looked back over you life and counted the many ways God touched your heart early on and began His work of Grace? In my case I see  many gentle tuggings in little events. It was the in the seemingly common place things that God began to move upon me. It was first at my dear grandmother's side I heard about the Goodness of God and the coming of Jesus on the clouds. That stayed in my heart and is still there. Once I sat up late sitting at the table with an elderly neighbor who spoke to me of Christ. My heart was moved. I remember buying a record that was on sale for the pretty girl on the cover only to discover it was an album of spiritual songs by Stuart Hamblin. One particular song called "It is no secret" ministered to me and seemed to be wringing tears from me. God knows how to get the seed planted and how to water it. We do not understand fully His workings but we can be sure that He is at work. As we have opportunity to speak a word here or there let's be faithful for we know not the mission on which that word was sent.

Let's keep running and not slack up

1Co 9:24  Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.
Heb 12:1  Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,  Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

There are many kinds of races. One is called a relay race because a baton is relayed from one runner to another. It was divided up into four parts and there was a runner assigned to each part. The first part needed a  runner who was fast off the blocks. The two middle runners were just to be consistent and the last leg was for a runner who could "kick" it in with a burst of speed. Then you have the marathon race in which the runner must be in it for the long haul alone. Also coaches know that there is a point in the race when the tendency is to "hit the wall" which means the runner has run out of readily available strength and must reach really deep for that "second wind". This is a very critical point in every race and is the point where many races are won or lost. This is where the coach is often on the side lines yelling "keep going! give it all you got!" It becomes a mental versus physical battle. A decision is made by the runner way down inside to keep on going or to begin to slacken up. It is very much like this in our spiritual lives. Where are you in your particular race? We must ask ourselves...What is holding us back or slowing us down? What unnecessary weights are we carrying? Brothers and sisters many of us are getting to or are at that critical point. We can not slack up now! Lets keep our eyes on our coach and listen to His Words. Let's RUN!

"holidays" Tradition or Truth?

We have had quite a bit of discussion lately about the observance of "holidays". Paul says something about observing days.
Gal.
4:9-11
But now, after that ye have
known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak
and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?
Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years. I am afraid of
you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain.

Rom.
14:1-8
Him that is weak in the faith
receive ye,
but not to
doubtful disputations.  For one believeth that he may eat all
things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs. Let not him that eateth
despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge
him that eateth: for God hath received him. Who art thou that judgest
another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea,
he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand. One man
esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day
alike.
Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.  He that
regardeth the day, regardeth
it
unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth
not regard
it. He that
eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that
eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks. For
none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself.

For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether
we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we
are the Lord's.

The following are my (Frank Gouchnour) thoughts on the subject.
First , let's set "Santa" aside from this discussion because he is very clearly a Satanic substitute for God and a patently obvious lie.
We daily observe or “go by” a calendar arranged by a Catholic Pope and mostly named after Greek gods. This was set up before we were born and most of us seldom think about it. That doesn't make us all idolaters if we say something like, " see you on Thursday" (being named ofter the Greek god of war). Nowhere in Scripture is meeting on Sunday morning between 9:45 and 12 commanded. That was probably a Catholic invention too, yet we still do it. Why? I think mainly because people already by tradition have that time free and it is more convenient to go with it than to make a big issue about it being tradition (or some might even say pagan; Sunday being named after the sun). Biblically, the Church has freedom to meet at any time. So what about Christmas and Easter? We do not know the exact time of Jesus' birth or even the resurrection. The calendar has changed a lot since then. We can pinpoint the resurrection a lot closer than His birth. But we are not told to observe either of them as "holidays". Both of the ordinances (ordered observances) of Baptism and the Lord's table are showing the Lord's death and resurrection in a symbolic way. This is how we commemorate or bring into remembrance the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. The early Church had communion every time they met. It was the central feature of their teaching, worship and remembrance. Most Churches do not do that today but rather focus on other forms of worship such as music. Tradition has very deep roots and often has no basis at all in Scripture. What about pews and pulpits? What about manner of dress? Men and women in Bible times all wore robes. So there are many things we do that are okay even if it is not spelled out or commanded, like what to wear or when to meet or whether we sit in pews or chairs. An idol could be made out of a normally innocent thing if it is allowed to displace The Lord as the center of our life. So, if you have a Christmas tree for reasons other than making an idol out of it or if you give gifts to people you love on a certain day is that idolatry?  I don't think so. But if you esteem it evil then to you it is evil. To many it is nothing more than a nice reminder of God's creation of evergreens and that even in winter there is hope. By tradition people are to one degree or another thinking about Jesus during the Christmas and Easter seasons. Why not take advantage of that to preach the Gospel through the details of Jesus' birth and resurrection? Those Scriptures are there to be read and understood and should be taught anyway. Then there is the tradition of family gatherings at Christmas. Families don't get together enough as it is so why not take advantage of the time and use it for the glory of God? The Bible gives a list of things that we should be thinking about. Phil. 4:8  So let's look for the good and the praise worthy in all of this and think on that. Christians in early times bought and ate meat that had been offered to idols. That didn't make them idolaters. Let's just enjoy the meat and give thanks to God who created it and forget the dirty hands that prepared it.
